What Is a Vehicle Service Contract (VSC)?

A Vehicle Service Contract (VSC) is optional, additional coverage you can purchase to help cover the cost of certain repairs and services after your manufacturer’s warranty expires. It can also fill gaps in your existing warranty by covering parts and services not originally included.

How Do They Work?

Here’s an example:

  • After your car's warranty expires, you’re responsible for any repair costs.

  • But if you purchased a Vehicle Service Contract, and your air conditioning system breaks down in year four, your VSC provider would cover the repair cost (minus any deductible), as long as it’s included in your plan.

Enjoy Exclusive Benefits of VSC

Peace of Mind

Mechanical problems can happen at any time, and repairs can be costly. A VSC helps take the stress out of surprise expenses by covering approved repairs, letting you drive with confidence.

Budget Protection

Major repairs like transmission or engine work can cost thousands of dollars. With a VSC, you’ll pay a set deductible (if any), instead of footing the full bill.

Customizable Coverage

Plans can often be tailored to your driving habits, vehicle age, and mileage. Whether you want basic powertrain protection or more comprehensive coverage, there’s a VSC to fit your needs.

Nationwide Repair Network

Many VSCs give you access to a wide network of certified repair shops, so you can get service wherever you are.

Extra Perks

Some contracts include extras like towing, rental car reimbursement, roadside assistance, and even trip interruption coverage.

Increases Resale Value

The contract is transferable, so it can add value when selling your vehicle—potential buyers may appreciate the added protection.

General VSC FAQs

A warranty (usually provided by the vehicle manufacturer) is included with the purchase of a new car and covers certain repairs and defects for a limited time or mileage (for example, 3 years or 36,000 miles). It’s included at no extra cost and is meant to guarantee the quality of the vehicle from the start.

A Vehicle Service Contract (VSC), on the other hand, is an optional protection plan you can purchase—either when the factory warranty expires or even while it's still active. A VSC helps cover the cost of repairs and services that may not be included under your original warranty, especially as your car gets older.

The best time to buy a Vehicle Service Contract depends on your situation, but here are a few key moments when it makes the most sense:

1. When Your Factory Warranty Is About to Expire

This is one of the most popular times to purchase a VSC. Once your manufacturer’s warranty ends, you’ll be responsible for all repair costs. A VSC helps you stay protected and avoid surprise expenses.

2. When You Buy a Used Vehicle

If you’re buying a pre-owned car (especially one that’s out of warranty), a VSC can offer peace of mind by covering potential repairs that may come up sooner than with a new car.

3. While Your Vehicle Is Still in Good Condition

Some providers may limit or deny coverage if the car already has high mileage or existing issues. Buying a VSC early can lock in better coverage options and pricing.

4. If You Plan to Keep Your Car Long-Term

If you’re someone who drives their vehicle well beyond the warranty period, a VSC can be a smart investment to help protect against wear-and-tear repairs over time.

5. When You Want to Budget Better

A VSC can help smooth out your expenses by protecting you from large, unexpected repair bills—making it easier to plan your budget.

A Vehicle Service Contract can absolutely be worth it—depending on your needs, vehicle, and how long you plan to keep it. If you plan to keep your car long-term and want protection from unexpected repair costs, a Vehicle Service Contract can be a smart investment.
Yes! Many VSC providers offer coverage for used vehicles, though eligibility may depend on the car’s age, mileage, and condition.
